"a salacious and tragic tale"

Spence has written a well-paced and, in many ways, enjoyable book. The surprise is that she does not include some form of introduction, explaining why any of us should care about her subject.

The answer, if one were to project, is the insight her life gives into a particular aspect of British social history and, in particular, her divorce, which rocked the establishment weeks before the Profumo Affair blew it apart... That said, it is a salacious and tragic tale, perfectly suited for the small screen, for which – reportedly, as the second series of A Very English Scandal – it may soon be destined.
