"It is a tough time to be a children’s book written in 1957 and reissued in 2020"

It’s the sort of storyline that wouldn’t pass go nowadays (male stalker behaviour; domestic kidnap; subjugated, expendable and exchangeable female lead with no agency; slavery). It has been slammed by some online for its lack of wokeness. Yet being a little weary of plot-light picture books with yucky digital artwork featuring empowered female leads who speak in banner slogans, I’m sticking up for this eccentric historical treasure. Some things are best seen at face value, especially if the face is surrounded by a mane.
