"the storytelling is entertaining, comical and breezy"

This imaginative debut novel is set in a magical and historical version of London in which half a dozen rival families make enchanted attire for royalty. It opens with the news that Captain Hatmaker, father of young Cordelia, has been lost at sea. She refuses to believe he is dead, and her investigations lead to revelations involving a princess, mysterious thefts, hidden identities, fun at the expense of actors (the author’s other profession), escapes, dastardly villains and a good many charmed materials for hats and other clothes. The first of a series, this book advocates courage, friendship and reconciliation, as well as freedom from gender constraints.
