"plenty of spark and impetus to make up for its not wholly original premise"

Horror-movie aficionados — them again — may recall a middling Denzel Washington thriller from 1998, Fallen, featuring an evil discarnate entity with a similar modus operandi. The Hollow Ones, though, has plenty of spark and impetus to make up for its not wholly original premise. And yes, the investigator character’s surname is a nod to Algernon Blackwood, the writer perhaps best remembered for his stories featuring “psychic doctor” John Silence.
