"grabs you on the very first page and doesn’t let go until the final, last-minute, twist"

Michael Connelly’s early novels, Angels Flight (1999) for example, had a great sense of place, so much so that Los Angeles became a character in itself. Here it is merely a backdrop to a desperate dialogue-driven race against time that highlights the absurdities of the American justice system and the antics of those who work within it. Haller, still on the wagon, is not as interesting a protagonist as Bosch — his mantra “act like a winner, you’ll become a winner” is no match for Bosch’s “everybody counts or nobody counts” — but this simply doesn’t matter in The Law of Innocence. If Haller is innocent then someone else must be guilty.
