"a first-class book, a subtle stretching of the biographical form that is also superbly readable"

Later in his career, Houdini began attacking spiritualism... Disappointingly, Posnanski ignores this surprising part of Houdini’s career... He is brilliant, however, on Houdini’s real-life afterlife... This is a first-class book, a subtle stretching of the biographical form that is also superbly readable. And the reason for Houdini’s fame? Posnanski believes it lies in escapology itself. It was his shtick, for sure, but it also captured something deeper and continues to resonate today. As Posnanski concludes: “I guess we all want to escape something.”
