"It may be a little sugary for some tastes, but Stead’s wisdom and empathy put paid to my lurking cynicism"

This is not a Jacqueline Wilson novel with feckless adults and borderline poverty; pretty much all the cast members are kind and comfortable and want everything to be all right. But its author, Rebecca Stead, also a New Yorker, is saying that anxieties are still real no matter how cosy and amicable the divorce. It holds the hand of the child with two homes who has nothing in the right place, interminable scheduling, and her own guilt and worries about the parent she’s not with. Bea, who also suffers from eczema, always seems to have an emotional itch to scratch.
