"Gifford has created an undeniably haunting love story"

Much of Elisabeth Gifford’s The Lost Lights of St Kilda (Corvus £14.99) takes place three years earlier. Cambridge student Fred Lawson arrives on the island and falls in love with its wild beauty and a young St Kildan, Chrissie Gillies. A decade later Fred is an escaped prisoner of war, fleeing the Germans through occupied France, sustained by his memories of Chrissie and tormented by thoughts of loss and betrayal. Gifford has created an undeniably haunting love story, although her evocation of St Kilda’s lost community carries more conviction than her account of Fred’s wartime odyssey.
