"As elegies go, The Missing Lynx is an awful lot of fun"

Barnett’s writing is clear and unobtrusively witty; he has a tendency to sprinkle about nerdy references to Aliens or The Big Lebowski, which may grate with some but which I generally enjoyed. And the book is full of cheery, Terry Pratchett-esque footnotes. I learnt from one that the hippos imported to Colombia by the drug baron Pablo Escobar escaped after his death and are causing havoc in the jungle. It also contains a wealth of scientific information on the various techniques — carbon dating, laser-cutting, gene sequencing — that have allowed palaeontologists to piece together this lost world...Yet we have a chance to bring some hint of it back to life and, like Barnett in this charming, sad book, I pray that we take it.
