"This book whizzes through the history of 50 innovations"

Those who have listened to Harford’s podcast series of the same name are also likely to be disappointed. Often the chapters feel like a verbatim write-up of what Harford says in his podcast, with the same anecdotes and pay-offs. As the podcast has been out since March last year, this seems like a missed opportunity to give existing fans something extra.

Yet despite the gripes, it is a lively introduction to some of the most ingenious, yet often overlooked inventions that have changed the way we live.
