"No partisanship is needed to enjoy these eclectic, rich dishes"

Her aims were to assemble as many of the writers who fed her love for Italian literature as she could, giving priority to women and lesser-known writers, and – importantly, given its idiocy and currency – to counter the perception of an American she knew who had told her: “Nothing bad can possibly happen in Italy."... And the Italian language that unites the stories is the bright, polyphonous invention of each writer. Lahiri’s group of translators, who have done so eloquently and intuitively, deserve our congratulations too. As she rightly says, for us anglophones, “Translation, in the end, is the key.” Because it is not that bad things don’t happen in Italy, it’s that, wherever we don’t speak the language, we need what happens to be explained to us, as truthfully as possible, or we’ll never find out.
