A soaring autobiographical poem, meditating on death and celebrating life, from one of our most cherished, critically acclaimed and bestselling writers.

4 stars out of 5

"Some of his best poetry was in his journalism, and some of his best journalism is in this poem."

Some of his best poetry was in his journalism, and some of his best journalism is in this poem. We have pithy verdicts on Rembrandt, De Stijl, Moulin Rouge and, schoolboyishly, Rossana Podestà's "magnificent bazookas"... The intellectual showboating can drag ("Diderot, loathing Boucher,/ Much preferred Chardin") but it comes from a place of love: "There is so much to enjoy", he writes, and he needs to share it all. He can't die before telling us why Thelonius Monk's jazz is like Turner's seascapes.
