"achievements, as well as its rich holdings, are handsomely illuminated"

The Royal Academy has been running a series of events (and opened its wonderful new galleries) to celebrate its 250th anniversary. The festivities were a reminder of the central role the RA has played in the formation of a native school of art. Something of its achievements, as well as its rich holdings, are handsomely illuminated in The Royal Academy of Arts: History and Collections edited by Robin Simon and MaryAnne Stevens (Yale £75). As a teaching institution, exhibition venue and artists’ club it has driven, and sometimes been reluctantly pulled into supporting, almost every significant development in British art.
