It's been a good summer for forensics expert Dr David Hunter. Then a call comes from an old associate: a body has been found, and she'd like Hunter to take a look. A partially mummified corpse has been discovered in the hospital's cavernous loft, but not even Hunter can say how long it's been there.

"Beckett has regained his best form"

This is the sixth in Beckett’s “Hunter” series, and while not all have been as assured as the first entry, Whispers of the Dead, the new book demonstrates that Beckett has regained his best form. While the exigencies of a macabre investigative thriller are dispatched with characteristic aplomb, the real achievement here is the threatening presence of the decaying hospital itself. Hunter, dealing with the trauma of the death of his wife and child, remains a strong protagonist, and there is an avoidance of too much extraneous forensic detail.
