"There is no sign of second-album syndrome: the mix of grotty provincial realism and amateur cold-case sleuthing works just as well here."

CJ Tudor’s darkly quirky hit debut, The Chalk Man, shuttled between flashbacks and the present as its hero tried to solve a crime he and his schoolboy gang encountered in the 1980s. In The Taking of Annie Thorne... Tudor reworks the formula, with Joe, grumpily returning as a teacher to his Nottinghamshire birthplace, investigating what happened to his sister after she went missing in 1992 while she was with Joe and his mates. There is no sign of second-album syndrome: the mix of grotty provincial realism and amateur cold-case sleuthing works just as well here.
