In his personal life, John Walter II was a bit boring. A reticent fellow, he married late in life and spent a lot of time constructing a country estate at Bear Wood near Reading. He was keen on gardening and, his Times obituary reported, was as happy planting and pruning as he was running the paper. By the time of his death in 1847, the circulation of The Times had risen from about 1,500 to 30,000. Without him, the paper would certainly have foundered like the other half-baked 18th-century news-sheets. With him, it thrived. “Hallelujah,” exclaims one 1985 history of The Times, “we shall not look upon his like again.”
