Over the last five years, transgender people have seemed to burst into the public eye: Time declared 2014 a `trans tipping point', while American Vogue named 2015 `the year of trans visibility'.

"One of the most interesting books I read this year"

One of the most interesting books I read this year was veteran activist Christine Burns’s Trans Britain: Our Journey from the Shadows, which pieces together sometimes heartbreaking human stories of what it was like to grow up transgender in the 20th century. The current political debate on trans rights has become so toxic as to be intimidating for those not already deeply versed in it; but whatever your position on reform, this history of public repression and private struggle makes it clear why emotions are running so high. Let’s hope 2019 brings more light, and less raging heat, to politics across the board.
