"a haunting depiction of a person going missing before he ever vanished"

It is easy to adhere to what this meticulous, committed book describes as the “common sense” version of events surrounding his disappearance... As a portrait of Edwards...Withdrawn Traces is excellent, the archive material and testimony from old friends adding sweet, affectionate detail: toast eaten in bedrooms, poetry written, plans hatched. As it approaches his disappearance, though, it spins off into rhetorical questions... with its precise, abundant detail, Withdrawn Traces tries to fill that absence back in... It is a haunting depiction of a person going missing before he ever vanished.
