Why do we speak the way we do, and what do our voices tell others about us? What is the truth behind the myths that surround how we speak? Jane Setter explores these and other fascinating questions in an accessible and engaging account that will appeal to anyone interested in how we use our voices in daily life.

"From the irritating Valley Girl uptalk to Jacob Rees-Mogg’s vocal fry, we are judged by how we speak"

Most of this sprightly and informative book is not about phonetics, though, but accents and what they say about us. Setter is fascinating on RP (received pronunciation), which exists as a widespread middle- and upper-class accent largely because the wealthy were relatively mobile whereas the poor stayed in their regions. “The closer you are to RP,” Setter comments, “the more upper-class people believe you to be.”
